Transport safety investigators are on the scene of a light plane crash in western Victoria after two men aged in their 40s are fighting for life.

Emergency crews were called to the scene in a field near Stawell about 12.45pm on Friday.

Victoria Police have confirmed the fixed wing aircraft went down just north of Stawell airport.

The two men are being treated by ambulance paramedics at the scene and will shortly be airlifted to hospital.

A witness told the ABC he saw the light plane in a flat spin before it disappeared behind trees.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) confirmed the single-engine Bristell S-LSA plane was registered with Soar Aviation, a flight training school based in Moorabbin in Melbourne’s south-east, the ABC is reporting.
