Sydney peak hour traffic has been brought to a halt after more than 20 cars broke down on Sydney’s M4 motorway.

It is believed the breakdowns were caused by contaminated fuel from a Caltex service station near Eastern Creek .

The NRMA’s Peter Khoury told Sky News the breakdowns happened after drivers filled up with E10 unleaded petrol.

Mr Khoury said the motoring body would conduct tests to confirm whether water seeped into the petrol, contaminating it.

He said this could be costly for affected drivers, who would have to have their tanks drained.

“It doesn’t take long at all for contaminated petrol to shut your engine down,”Mr Khoury told Sky News.

“It’s a big job to clean up, and not the sort of thing we can do at the side of the road.

“We are getting our tow trucks there as quickly as possible, and they will tow the cars to the mechanics.”

The convoy of vehicles were moved off the motorway to a safe location until the NRMA arrived.

Mr Khoury advised motorists to avoid the area as peak hour traffic continued to chug along one Sydney’s busiest arterials.

City motorists are experiencing significant delays for the second time in two days; on Wednesday two separate truck incidents – one in the Harbour Tunnel and another on the M5 – also caused chaos on the roads.
