Two people have been winched to safety after their light plane crashed into a river near Sydney.

The plane issued a mayday call shortly after 3.15pm before an emergency landing in Nattai National Park, 15km southwest of Camden, police say.

Footage from a Nine Network helicopter showed the plane crumpled in a river, possibly broken in half.

Rescue crews are establishing whether any other passengers were in the plane.
